MAREANO map serviceA map service for Norway's seabed — combining marine layers for exploration, with admin tools to keep data sources current.
MAREANO / Institute of Marine Research
MAREANO maps depth, seabed geology, biodiversity, and human impact across Norwegian waters — collecting knowledge about the sea for research and management. In collaboration with the Institute of Marine Research, this project redesigned the map service at kartportal.mareano.no, together with the admin tools that keep its map layers up to date.
Value for client
Designed the MAREANO map service for combining seabed and marine layers in one view — with a separate admin side for keeping map sources up to date.
Designed a searchable layer catalog (Kartlag) grouped by subject area — bathymetry, seabed geology, biodiversity, habitats, and human impact.
Separated available layers from active layers, so users always know what's on the map and can reverse complex views.
Designed the admin flow for uploading and managing custom WMS map layers — with clear states for adding, replacing, and removing sources.
Designed for specialists and admins in one map
Specialists use the map for early-phase spatial overview — understanding how industry activity relates to environmental values in Norwegian waters. Admins need to keep the underlying layers accurate so that overview stays trustworthy.
Combining marine data for planning and assessment — and maintaining the layers behind the map
