Institute of Marine Research — Dugnad for havet
Dugnad for havet is the Institute of Marine Research's programme for gathering ocean observations at scale. PlanktonStatus is the mobile app that lets fish farm crews and specialists photograph jellyfish and plankton in the field, have them recognised by AI, and feed species, time, and location straight into the shared Dugnad for havet dataset.
Designed PlanktonStatus for people working on the water — a mobile-first tool that turns a single photo into a verified observation, warns fish farms about harmful species, and keeps working when the weather and the network don't.
Built the reporting flow around AI recognition — a photo identifies the species, so users confirm rather than type under pressure.
Auto-filled the critical metadata — time, location, and conditions captured automatically to cut clicks, cut typing, and cut errors in harsh weather.
Designed harmful-species warnings that combine observations with currents, wind, and tide, so fish farms get early notice and time to prepare.
Made registration work offline — observations can be captured at sea and synced to Dugnad for havet once there's a connection.
